The Arizona Bunny Network received an email today from a nice woman who found 4 baby bunnies living in her backyard. Her yard borders a greenbelt so someone probably dumped these poor bunnies there. This is the time of year where rescues are inundated with calls about bunnies being dumped. Most of these bunnies are Easter bunnies who were purchased as Easter gifts and now people are tired of them because the novelty has worn off or Easter bunnies who didn't sell.
She had been leaving food for them for a few days as the mother was with them. But the mother was now no longer coming back. Unfortunately the mother bunny probably met a terrible fate being out in the wild in 115 degree weather. She did not know who to call so was trying her best to keep them alive. She found our information and we went right over to try and round them up. Unfortunately shortly before we arrived one of the babies passed away. We were able to find two more babies. One is a tiny white baby with gray spots who was very thin and dehydrated. The other a little gray bunny who seemed to be in better condition. The fourth was nowhere to be seen. We searched and searched but couldn't find him. We left our phone number with instructions to call if she seems him again and we will be right over.
The two babies will now go into loving foster care until they are old enough for adoption.
Please pass on the word that domestic rabbits can't survive out in the wild. They also can't survive the heat of the Arizona summer where temperatures have been over 110 for the past few weeks. Dumping them in the wild is sentencing them to a painful death. If you have rabbits you can no longer care for bring them to an animal rescue organization, PLEASE don't dump them. These two babies were very lucky to find the yard of someone who cared enough to find help for them.
